Healthcare Related Questions, Answered for You

FAQ: FAQ

What is your new patient procedure?

On your first visit, we know it can be a little daunting, especially if you've never had this type of treatment before. We keep this in mind and try to ensure there is plenty of time to answer any questions you may have.

You'll be with us for about an hour, and we will give you a short form to fill in answering questions about your medical history and general health. You'll then have a chat with your chiropractor about what's brought you in to see us.

It's time for the assessment then, where we will examine your whole body, not just the area of your pain. This will include your nerves, joints and muscles, and we can work out what's going on and how we can help.

Provided the examination indicates that the treatment is appropriate, you will begin receiving treatment on your first visit. This can be delayed only if your chiropractor thinks other medical interventions are more appropriate before starting treatment (e.g. Xrays, MRI scan, blood tests).

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic, meaning ‘to heal by hand’ is a regulated primary healthcare profession. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose, treat, manage and prevent disorders of the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, and muscles) as well as the effects these disorders (such as lower back pain, neck pain, joint pain) can have on the nervous system and a person’s general health. When they assess patients they take their entire physical, emotional and social wellbeing into account.

Based in Mumbles, Oyster Chiropractic has a holistic approach, looking not only at pain and symptoms but also how we can improve your overall health and quality of life.

Chiropractors use a range of techniques, with an emphasis on manipulation of the spine called ‘adjustments’. We take your whole body into account, not just your symptoms. Treatments can include soft tissue work, adjustments, craniosacral therapy, massage, acupuncture (dry needling), and advice on exercise and nutrition. We may also teach you exercises intended to help you recover and prevent recurring symptoms. Our chiropractors get to know our clients and enjoy providing truly personal care.

Do you offer free health consultations?

We do! We understand that it's important for patients to be comfortable with the treatment they are receiving. Because Chiropractic is relatively new to the healthcare field, we like to give patients a chance to find out if they think it's right for them, before commencing treatment. You can find our free consultation slots on our online booking system here.

How does it work?

Chiropractors use palpation (touch) to locate areas of your spinal and other joints which are not moving quite as well as they should be. There are lots of reasons these restrictions develop, including trauma, repetitive postures/actions, and stress. When movement has changed, your brain starts treating the area differently, often causing weakness and pain. We aim to get those restrictions moving again, which allows your brain and your body to communicate with each other effectively.
